Hoping IRHA newspaper program won’t hurt Daily

Corey Folkerts

In response to the quote from Kathy Lawrence in Wednesday’s article, “IRHA will decide on newspapers,” I have a few things to say.

I don’t think that anyone expects a college newspaper to be able to compete with national newspapers on any level (except, of course, ability to report local issues).

However, attitudes of pessimism, such as the one I find in Lawrence’s quote, strike me as tending to quash the creativity necessary to overcome obstacles.

Indeed, national newspapers do have much greater resources, but they also have a much larger target audience.

Perhaps the Daily will be forced to fill a slightly different, more local niche if this Newspaper Readership Program gets implemented.

Perhaps not.

In the end, I certainly hope the Daily can remain the respectable, entertaining and informative publication that it has been in the past.
