A new scholarship to spotlight individuals involved with community service will be awarded during Veishea’s opening ceremonies.”A lot of community-service oriented people get overlooked,” said Jen Matsen, community showcase coordinator. “We want to honor and recognize people for their hard work.”Grade point average and financial need are not criteria for the award, she said. It is based solely on community service. One student will receive a $400 scholarship for tuition and a biography in the Veishea program, said Kendra Nelson, community involvement co-chair.This is the first year for the scholarship, which is organized by the community involvement committee, said Nelson, senior in agronomy. She said she hopes to find a corporate sponsor for the award, which currently is privately funded.Students interested in the scholarship can pick up an application in the West Student Office space, or they may visit www.veishea.org and click on the scholarship, said Matsen, junior in industrial engineering. The application is due 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 7 in the Veishea office.Matsen said the more community service in any area, the better a chance the applicant has. Applicants will be asked to list the community service they have done over the past four years, which she said will give some fairness for people, no matter what year they are in college.”Since this is the first year for the scholarship, I don’t think turnout will be high, and there won’t be a lot of competition,” Matsen said. “All should apply because the likelihood of winning is good this year.”Nelson said all ISU students are eligible. “Anyone with community service should apply,” she said. “It’s another way for a worthy person to get recognized for their work and be involved with Veishea.”Dan Klocke, community showcase coordinator, said he hopes to make this an annual award.”I hope to get a lot of applications and like to see a lot of qualified people apply,” said Klocke, junior in mechanical engineering. “People should be proud to win this award. I think [the scholarship] is very important because, as a college, we should recognize people that work hard at the books and the community.”
