Older Adults Succeeding in School (OASIS) is trying to become more involved on campus by applying for funding from the Government Student Body for the first time this semester.OASIS is a group for non-traditional students at Iowa State. Non-traditional student are over 25 years old, taking care of a dependent, or someone who does not fit into the classic student mold, said Penny Rosenthal, director of Off-Campus Adult Student Services. The group has been on campus for three semesters, but this is the first semester it has requested funding from GSB. The group was formed as a social group to allow adult students to meet students with similar concerns. “It is a way for students to meet at the same time, same place, to cross paths for the week,” Rosenthal said. She said the group has grown this semester. The group attendance is currently about 10 or 12 members each meeting. “There is always a group growing or shrinking, and we are growing,” Rosenthal said. The group has several plans for the money requested from GSB. Rosenthal said the group is interested in applying for an area in the Student Office space. It would also like to have more activities for more member’s families to be involved. In the past, the members have gone sledding and have exercised a couple mornings a week. The group would also like to become more active in the selection of the off-campus senate seats, she said. Steve Medanic, finance director for GSB, said the group’s funding will be examined this weekend. “The group has no problems so far, but I haven’t had a chance to look at it too close,” he said. He said while each group may not get the full amount it asks for, it generally gets some funding. The group meets Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Memorial Union in the Regency Room.
