`Faggot,’ insult or bundle of sticks?
February 21, 2001
Jocelyn Marcus wrote in her opinion, Eminem isn’t that bad if you listen, “he only uses ‘faggot’ as an insult, not referring to gay men but to the Insane Clown Posse, boy bands or his mom’s lawyer.” Are you saying you agree with the use of the term? Do you know what the word “faggot” really means? A faggot is a bundle of sticks, twigs or branches bound together and used as fuel to create fire. It is not meant to be used as an insult. Whoever decided it should be is ignorant and careless.ÿAlso used in a demeaning way is the word “gay.” Why? If one of your friends were gay would you say “you’re being gay” or call him or her a faggot? Probably not. So why do so many people use this word with such recklessness? We should respect people for who they are. Don’t be under the impression that people understand you the way you want to be understood. Think about the things you say and how those words might affect other people. You and your friends might “understand” what you’re trying to say, but I don’t. A lot of people don’t. A lot of people think you sound stupid and you know what? They’re right. Call me politically correct. That’s fine.Brett Meisinger
