ISU women run away from Aggies
February 26, 2001
For ISU seniors Gintare Cipinyte and Erica Haugen, Saturday offered no surprises.Pre-season All-American Angie Welle led the Cyclones with 17 points and 12 rebounds as Iowa State did away with the Big 12 worst Texas A&M Aggies 82-61 Senior Day.After the game, both players glanced down at note cards and stood before a microphone. They thanked everyone from the band and their boyfriends, to their parents and ISU head coach Bill Fennelly (who sometimes doubled as a father figure for the aforementioned two, as well as seniors Sarah Robson and Megan Taylor).Robson and Taylor also stood before the mike, but they used a more impromptu approach to their “thank you” speeches. Taylor said that it was cake because “all you do is thank people, and that’s not hard.”During the game, she accomplished something that is a little more difficult.Taylor became Iowa State’s all-time career rebounding leader when she grabbed her fifth rebound with 18:01 left in the game. But she gave about as much thought to this feat as she did to her speech.”It’s something to write on my resume,” Taylor said in a nonchalant tone. She grabbed seven in all to go along with her 15 points.Something that nearly every Cyclone thought about was Texas A&M’s Jaynettta Saunders. The senior forward was the Aggies’ offense. Saunders ended the game with 29 points while guard Brandy Jones finished second with eight.Taylor said Saunders could “jump over the top of people and shoot it.”She never did, but she held her team together for most of the first half. After Lindsey Wilson made two free throws with 8:35 left, the Aggies only trailed 25-23.But then Cipinyte and Welle scored six points between them and Wilson added a pull-up jumper from the free-throw line to give the Cyclones an 8-0 run.Nearly five minutes later, Haugen made a three from the left baseline to give Iowa State a 41-25 lead.Texas A&M never recovered.”This team understands now how hard you have to play and compete every single day to win,” Fennelly said. The days are numbered for the four seniors.”I’m glad it’s over in one regard,” Fennelly said of Saturday’s game. “I’m very sad it’s over in another.”Fennelly said that soon the senior jerseys will be filled by other athletes, “but I don’t think you’re going to forget them.”Cyclone fans got a final chance to remember them as a unit when all four were on the court for about six minutes of the second half.”Once we got ahead, I wanted them to play together,” Fennelly said. “I just wish Sarah could have made a basket.”Robson, Cyclone guard, was 0-4 from the field but she did grab two rebounds. The Cyclones improved to 22-4 overall and 12-3 in the Big 12. The Aggies fell to 12-14 and 2-13 respectively.Iowa State finishes out their regular season at Texas Tech Wednesday. However, Fennelly is mostly ready for the post-season.”Everything I do is for March,” he said.
