Cyclone baseball loses three over the weekend
February 13, 2001
It seemed as if the ISU baseball team was on line to win at least two games this weekend, but it was not meant to be as the Cyclones dropped all three of their games against Southeast Missouri State. They lost Saturday’s game, 5-4, in extra innings and dropped a doubleheader Sunday, 3-2 and 3-0, at Capaha Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo.In an opening game Saturday, which was moved from Friday due to inclement weather, Iowa State went up, 4-1, in the ninth inning when Ryan Wickham hit a two-out double that scored baserunners Rob Conway, Matt Nordby and Spencer Allen. The hit broke a tie that lasted three innings, and it seemed that the hit by Wickham, who went 2-for-5 for the game, was going to allow Iowa State to get its first win of the year. But the Indians were not going to let up. In the bottom of the ninth inning, an error, a double by Southeast Missouri State’s Clemente Bonilla and a walk issued to Brad Simmons loaded the bases. Jason McNertney then gave up a double by Zach Borowiak which scored two runners. After McNertney issued another walk, Vern Hatton singled to score Brice Nicholas to tie the game. The final blow was delivered on the next at-bat when Shane Allen stepped in and singled to left-center field, scoring Borowiak.”We just couldn’t get an out,” ISU pitcher Josh Twedt said. “We needed to execute better.”McNertney (0-1) took the loss for the Cyclones. He was unable to retire any batter in his first outing. The Cyclones gave up 10 hits and three errors. The Cyclones were left stranded with the bases loaded in their half of the fourth inning. In the first game of the Sunday doubleheader, the Cyclones jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a lead-off home run by T. J. Bohn to left field in the second inning and a Bonilla error in the fifth inning which scored shortstop Adam Christ.Southeast Missouri State answered as Brad Beatty homered to left field in the bottom half of that inning to cut the lead in half. The Indians threatened to score in the sixth inning, but a pitching trio of Josh Twedt, Alex Donnelly and Mark Hanrahan worked together to dodge a huge bullet, as Brian Hopkins lined out for the third out of the inning with the bases loaded. But the Indians did strike in the seventh with a Borowiak double that scored Bonilla and tied the game. With the game-winning run driven in by Allen, which scored Borowiak, the loss went to Hanrahan, who fell to 0-1.In the final game of the weekend, Iowa State was held scoreless as Southeast Missouri State’s Brad Purcell pitched the majority of the game, allowing just three Cyclone hits and two walks.Alan Bomer (0-2) was on the mound for this game which lasted only one hour and 40 minutes. He lasted 5 2/3 innings, struck out three and walked only two Indian batters. The loss drops Iowa State’s record to 0-6. “It was disappointing,” Twedt said, “but we were in every game.”Twedt explained that at times both the pitching game and the hitting game were doing well, but they never combined to play one complete game.”We were closer to putting everything together,” Twedt said. They will play next weekend in a tournament in Natchitoches, La. The Cyclones will face St. Louis Friday, Northwestern Louisiana Saturday and Centenary Sunday.
