Demagoguery, propaganda and amusing insults
February 8, 2001
Tim Paluch’s “Monkey Bidness” column on Wednesday was interesting — it is uncommon to have a political commentary with such a zoological twist. Dubya, a chimp in a suit, and silenced Democrats. The mystery behind all these was masterfully explained with flawless logic, and this only took half of the column, too.Sarcasm aside, I do have one or two qualms about this column. Realizing that this is the Daily, I shouldn’t be surprised to find left-wing propaganda here and there, but I think the ISU community deserves more than Republican-bashing, misinformed issues and cheap ridicules. Please tell me how Bush’s cabinet nominees are “extreme right-wing.”For the sake of argument, let’s say that Attorney General John Ashcroft is a right-wing extremist. One out of 13 doesn’t make the whole cabinet “extreme right-wing.”Christie Whitman is pro-choice. Over one-third of the cabinet are minorities. Colin Powell is the first African American to be the Secretary of State. Please! Tax cut “for the wealthiest one percent.” Hello? Of course the wealthy will get the most tax cut in dollar terms, because they pay the most tax to begin with. In terms of rate, though, Bush’s plan will benefit the lower income bracket twice as much. At least give the man some credit for sticking to his word from the campaign trail.About cutting U.S. funds to overseas family planning that perform abortions — OK, there might be an issue here, but this is not something new. Since the Reagan and Bush Sr. administrations, the United States has done exactly that, until it was reversed when Clinton went to office. I don’t see what the fuss is about. Those clinics overseas are free to perform abortions as they please — just not with United States taxpayer money. The school voucher and government faith-based initiatives are more difficult issues, and I’m not sure I know enough to address them. However, please don’t throw in “separation of church and state” and “undermining the public school” without fair and reasoned analysis. I do believe Bush has a legitimate case in fighting the social problems in the United States. Throwing in demagoguery just to make him look bad does not do justice to Iowa State Daily readers. To Tim Paluch, the chimp-in-a-suit thing was amusing, but next time please come up with responsible journalism.Yandi Dharmadi
