ISU students are receiving more opportunities to study abroad this summer with 55 programs to chose from. The program offers 19 more destinations than the 36 offered last year.”Our goal is to send more and more students abroad,” said Michelle Szabo, study abroad adviser.Szabo said the goal for the Academic Plan 2000-2005 is to infuse global perspectives into learning scholarships. She said it is a campus-wide effort to get more students studying abroad. Shelley Taylor, director of study abroad for the College of Agriculture, said she thinks there is more involvement because there is more faculty interest, and students want to be more marketable. “Students are beginning to understand that in order to stand out in interviews and to be competitive in the job market, they need a wider perspective than if they didn’t have the international experience,” she said.Clare Cardinal-Pett, associate professor of architecture, said another reason there are so many new programs this year is for Iowa State to diversify the summer options. “It’s short and affordable, so that opens the doors for some people,” she said.Szabo said studying abroad over the summer is perfect for someone who has never been abroad before. The programs are short and are organized by ISU faculty and staff, allowing students to travel with professors they know. She also said many times students can complete their language credits or liberal arts and sciences foreign language requirements while abroad.Another reason Szabo said the summer study abroad programs are valuable is because the university’s 90-10 Tuition Aid policy. The policy allows students to pay 10 percent of the net tuition on ISU programs. There are also scholarships specifically for summer study abroad programs, and financial aid still applies in many cases.
