New bar opens on Main Street
February 16, 2001
Ames has been greeted by another bar, and its doors are open for business. However, Coconut Cove, 115 Main St., is still preparing for its grand opening later next week. Owner Jeremy Boehelman said the bar will be unlike anything Ames has to offer.”I grew up here, so I pretty much know that there’s nothing to do in this town, and there are no good bars,” Boehelman said. The bar scene in Ames is already quite busy; the town boasts at least 20 bars and lounges. But Boehelman said he already has plans to attract customers.”We’ll run some specials on different nights,” Boehelman said. “It’s way cooler than any other place in town. We’ve got a lot of cool stuff going on.”Bridget Moore, a native of Ames, said she questions a new bar’s ability to compete with existing businesses in the area.”The Zone [125 Main St.] attracts college kids and a lot more diversity than other bars in Ames,” said Moore, junior in English.Boehelman said, however, that Coconut Cove will be able to stand up to the competition because the bar is unique.”The layout, the decor — it’s not like anything here,” he said. “The atmosphere is really cool, and it’s probably one of the nicest places in town.”Moore said she is not optimistic about the bar’s location, though.”It’s like the black hole of bar reality,” she said. “No bars can survive it. Since the Zone opened in 1996, bars have gone under one after another there.”Moore said she would consider going to Coconut Cove but only if it were able to offer her more than The Zone.”They need to meet or beat the drink specials at The Zone, or they’re not going to pull in the Main Street crowd,” she said. “If you want somewhere to dance, why would you go somewhere else if there are cheap drink specials at The Zone?”
