`Moon’ is mysterious, but it shines brightly

Las Vegas is the one place on earth where a person can live in a complete fantasy. Fortunes are won and lost every day. For a thief, Vegas holds riches beyond imagination. But beware of the void moon.Michael Connelly rolls out the red carpet in the New York Times bestseller “Void Moon.” The novel features the familiar concept of “what goes around, comes around.”Cassie Black seems like an ordinary citizen trying to make a modest living in Los Angeles. The only difference is that she has spent the last five years in prison for manslaughter and robbery. Cassie has set out on the straight and narrow path of the reformed life. However, that familiar feeling of “outlaw juice” is still in her veins. She is willing to risk it all for one last payoff.Jack Karch has lived a stereotypical Las Vegas life. He grew up watching his father on stage trying to break into the spotlight. Jack even considered giving showbiz a try. But out of those dreams came the life of a private investigator. Now Karch uses his talents to make problems disappear.Money is the catalyst that brings everything together. The thieves want to land the major score, while the businessmen want to finish off the deal. Planning is key to both operations. Every last detail has been laid out and accounted for. Only one factor stands in the way — the void moon. The moon completes a full revolution around the earth every twenty-nine days. Astrologers have mapped out a course that has the moon pass through the twelve signs of the zodiac. When the moon moves from one sign to the next it passes through a state of limbo when it is not in any sign. This is known as a void moon.It is believed that during this time, which could last seconds or days, that personal judgment is impaired. In short, bad things will happen.”Void Moon” sets up a three-part story line. Part one features Cassie Black and the robbery. Part two deals with Jack Karch and the investigation. The two independent story lines are then merged in part three.Michael Connelly has produced a smooth read. The detail items in the book are offset nicely by the action sequences. Connelly also alludes to upcoming events by disguising certain important items as setting. “Void Moon” is more than a cops-and-robbers style novel. It has a deep underlying mystery that ties it all together. The reader’s task is to try and unravel these mysteries before Connelly lets them become known.Nothing about this book will disappoint the reader. The narrative is engrossing and clever. “Void Moon” exudes excelling throughout the entire framework. Connelly has defiantly come up with a top-notch winner.
