Women’s basketball prepares for battle with Oklahoma State
February 7, 2001
Tonight’s game will feature mixed emotions for both the No. 7 Iowa State Cyclones and the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. With the loss of 10 members of the OSU community, including two men’s basketball players, in a tragic plane crash in Colorado on Jan. 27, the OSU women’s basketball team will be full of emotion as they enter Hilton Coliseum tonight for the 7 p.m. tip-off.Iowa State will be happy to be at home.”It’s been a tough time traveling,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said, his face covered with scruffy whiskers, a leftover from the Cyclones long road trip which saw them play four out of the last five games on the road. “I think it’s important to get yourself academically set at home and a chance to revitalize your juices. February is a tough month.”The 18-2 Cyclones (8-1 Big 12) return from their latest game with Nebraska which Iowa State won 92-70.”It’s nice to be back home where all your fans are,” ISU sophomore Lindsey Wilson said. Oklahoma Sate is riding a string of wins, including an upset of then No. 20 Baylor, 69-66, and their latest victory, a 69-55 triumph over Kansas State.”The emotion that that school has gone through is amazing,” Fennelly said, “it’s one that none of us want to go through with.”But at the same time the Cyclones know that if they want to defend their Big 12 title, a victory tonight is a must.”You feel bad for them, and things like that,” ISU center Angie Welle said,” but we have goals that we have for the season and you can’t have any letdowns, no matter what happens.”Welle’s season has been far from a let-down. She is averaging 18.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Against Nebraska she scored 23 points, including 19 in the second half.”I’m sure they’re probably going to be emotionally drained,” Wilson said. “I don’t know if it’s going to be a good thing or a bad thing for them. I can’t imagine what all of them are going through.”Wilson has been setting the pace for the Cyclone women, with a total of 108 assists (5.4 per game) which leads the team. She also averages nearly 15 points per game.Oklahoma State (12-8, 4-5) is led by Kara Faulk who averages 11 points and 7.7 rebounds.”They’re a quality team,” Wilson said. “They beat Baylor and obviously we didn’t do too well against Baylor.”Welle, who is glad to be home, also cautions that the Cyclones need to be careful not to get too caught up in the emotion of being home.”[Being at home is] an advantage,” she said, “to have the crowd behind you and be on the home court, but it’s the same thing. We gotta play and we gotta play with a lot of emotion.”Fennelly warned the team that regardless of emotion, Oklahoma State is a good team. “Like I told our kids,” Fennelly said, “they beat Baylor and we didn’t. There won’t be any letdown, for us it’s too big of a game, it’s February and we only have seven [games] to go.”
