Interim ISU President Richard Seagrave will be going across the ocean with ISU students next spring. He will act as a primary instructor for study-abroad classes.Seagrave, along with other ISU professors, will be leading a new study-abroad program for Honors students in Florence, Italy.Elizabeth Beck, director of the University Honors Program, said students will spend less time in the classroom and more time out in the field.”It’s not the traditional norm, but it’s very rewarding,” she said. Each student is required to attend a weekly seminar called the Florence Text, where they will integrate the information for discussion and teach each other.Seagrave will be the primary instructor for the Florence Text.”It’s an overall course where we try to relate everything that’s going on in the modules and independent projects to the history of Florence,” Seagrave said. The program will begin in the fall with a basic Italian class. Once in Florence, the program will be arranged into three different modules, each containing three classes. The students will pick one of the three classes from each module, Beck said. Each module is two credits, the Florence Text is three credits, the independent projects will be two to three credits, and with the required Italian class, students will earn a total of 14 to 15 credits, Beck said. Twenty students will be accepted into the program, which will be open to Honors students first but may also consider other high-ability students.Students are also required to do an independent project on the topic of their choice. The projects will be formally presented to the instructors, local community people and other well-known campus administrators, she said.”This makes the semester personal to them,” Beck said.In addition to instructing the Florence Text, Seagrave will also serve as faculty director and will teach a module class with five other ISU professors.
