Women’s swimming and diving takes fifth place at Big 12 meet

The ISU women’s swimming and diving squad put on a record-breaking performance at the Jamail Swim Center last weekend. The Cyclones broke twelve school records en route to a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship.Iowa State scored 426 points, just behind Missouri, who finished with 434. The host team, Texas Longhorns, won the meet with 997.5 points.Iowa State went into the final relay in a battle with Missouri for fourth place, but the Tigers were able to pull ahead to finish the meet. “Our four women swam their hearts out,” ISU head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Three of them had lifetime bests, and we set a school record, but Missouri just eeked ahead of us.”Petra Plaminkova placed third in the 200 breaststroke to pace the Cyclones. Her time of 2:17.53 was fast enough to qualify her for NCAA consideration. The freshman also placed second in the 400 individual meter and third in the 200 IM while achieving all-conference status. Junior Amber McDowell fared well in the 200 butterfly final, placing fifth at 2:01.74.Marie Tremblay and Melissa Jensen also stood out for Iowa State. Tremblay took seventh in the 200 breaststroke final (2:20.62) while Jensen broke a school record in the 200 backstroke final. Jensen’s time of 2:02.60 earned her a seventh place finish and wiped out the school record set during the 1997-98 season.In the 100 freestyle, Jodel Fesenmaier placed 15th at :52.25. In the consolation final of the 100 freestyle, Rena Kelinson placed 17th at :51.83, which ranks as the third-fastest time in Cyclone history. Becca Meyer placed 18th (:51.87) while Dara Rose placed 19th at :52:08 in the same event. Meyer’s time ranks as the fourth-best time in the Iowa State record books while Rose’s time is the eighth best in school history.Freshman Shaylyn Green swam her way to a 10th place finish in the 1,650 freestyle. Her time of 17:19.13 stands as the fourth-best mark in ISU history. Sophomore Kristen Vanek was just a shade behind Green, placing 15th at 17:26.62. Her time ranks as the sixth-best time in the ISU record books.Susanne Notbohm also had a outstanding meet for Iowa State. Her record-setting pace in the 200 IM earned her a second place finish. The Germany-native also tied a school record in the 100 butterfly. “I think the meet was really, really awesome,” Notbohm said. “We had a good atmosphere with the parents there to support us.”The combination of Notbohm, Rose, Meyer and Rena Kelinson proved to be record-breaking as well. The four combined to take sixth place in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:26.97.In diving, freshman Sofie Nilsson led the Cyclones by placing 11th in the platform competition with a score of 272.70.Coach Sorenson was named Outstanding Co-Coach of the Big 12 Championship along with Texas coaches Jill Sterkel and Mike Walker. He mentioned that the number of Cyclones that made the finals was much better than previous years. “It’s the best meet that I’ve ever been a part of at Iowa State,” Sorenson said. “We thought we could get three or four of our relay records and we got all five. I was real proud of our women, the way they stood up and raced against some of the best teams in the country.”Up next for the Cyclones is the Go-Pher-It Invite on Feb. 24 in Minneapolis. Start time for the meet is to be announced.
