Cyclone hockey scorches Sun Devils

The ISU hockey team has run into trouble when playing on the road this season. Going into last weekend’s series, they were only 5-8 away from Ames. The Cyclones took a few steps in the right direction, however, with a sweep of Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.”It was huge for us to go on the road and dominate fairly well on both nights,” ISU assistant coach Randy Daley said. Friday, the Sun Devils took advantage of the road-weary visitors with an early goal by Mike Snowden to put the home squad ahead 1-0.”The first seven minutes Friday we had bus legs and they got off to a good start,” Daley said. “They tried to put a lot of pressure on our defense, and we countered with quick puck movement.”The counterattack led an offensive flow that the ‘Clones used to score five consecutive goals against netminder Dan Woog. Mark Krueger got Iowa State going in the first on a power play. Tallies by Nat Little and Chris Leyen gave the visitors a 3-1 lead after one period. The goals kept coming in the second as Glenn Detulleo and Jeremy Meyer put Iowa State in a convincing 5-1 advantage. Near the end of the middle frame, Eric Williams tried to single-handedly bring the Sun Devils back. Two quick scores past Nate Dahlen cut the deficit in half by the second intermission. The Cyclones made sure to close out Arizona State in the third with Scott Steinkamp and Pat Roberts making good on their shots. Sun Devil forward Steve Taranowski added a late goal, but the ISU offense had already delivered a 7-4 victory to the visitors.”It was very chippy style of hockey,” Daley said about the game. “We picked up the tempo and put the pressure on them.”This game marked the return of junior forward Tom Grimwood who missed the first semester due to an architectural-study program abroad. Grimwood contributed three assists in his first action of the season.Ian Smith got the Sun Devils out to another early lead on Saturday before Grimwood struck gold with his first score of the season. Tory Larson lit the lamp with six minutes left in the first to give Iowa State a 2-1 lead. The scoreboard would stay the same until early in the second, when Mike Gilbertson would rearrange the numbers to 3-1 in favor of the Cyclones. It didn’t take long for Arizona State to respond, tying the game with goals that came 40 seconds apart. The momentum would shift back to the ‘Clones as the period ran out. Leyen and Gilbertson added to the ISU total, making the score 5-3 after two periods.Just like the night before, the visitors put the game out of reach with two third-period goals from Detulleo and Larson. The contest ended with another 7-4 win for Iowa State. After suffering a sweep the week before at the hands of Illinois, the Cyclones knew they had to adjust to win these games.”We just went in feeling confident,” ISU defenseman Phil Hummel said. “From the start, we played a little harder, like we had a chip on our shoulder.”Now the cardinal and gold must make more adjustments as some of the team will be absent for the next two weeks due to the upcoming World University Games in Poland. Coach Daley will take over as head coach during Al Murdoch’s absence.”We’re going to have to change our style a little bit,” Daley said. “We’ll have to pay more attention to our defensive style of hockey. We have to make sure that we don’t put ourselves in the position to where the games will be shoot-outs.”The team’s first challenge will happen this weekend as St. Louis visits the Ames Ice Arena. The two teams met earlier this season on the Billikens’ home ice. While Iowa State dominated the first two games, both teams will sport different lineups this time around.”We need to look out for guys that didn’t play when we played them before,” Hummel said. “We expect them to be a well-improved team.”The Ice Arena will host the contests at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
