The ISU women’s swimming team earned its first Big 12 Conference dual victory in school history with a 157-143 win over Kansas Saturday in Lawrence. The Big 12 Conference was formed in 1996.In their last conference dual meet of the season, the Cyclones prepared for the Big 12 Conference meet Feb. 15 with a solid performance.”Especially for the seniors, it’s a great feeling to go out on a good note,” ISU senior captain Katie Knoll said. “I think it will help us a lot for the Big 12 meet. This is the little boost we needed to get our confidence up.”The Jayhawks controlled the relay events but the Cyclones countered by dominating the individual events. The Cyclones swept all three places in the 100 and 200 backstroke events.”It was our individuals that put us ahead,” Knoll said. “We got the top three in some events and that really helped our score. We knew it was going to be a close meet and everybody stepped up and did their part.”Freshman Melissa Jensen won the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.25 and sophomore Carmella Nogar turned in a winning time of 1:00.14 in the 200 backstroke. Nogar also claimed first place in the 200 individual medley and Jensen added a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke. Two other Cyclones were double winners in the meet. Freshman Petra Plaminkova won the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events while junior Amber McDowell won the 100 and 200 butterfly events with times of 58.24 and 2:04.91, respectively.
