Hockey splits weekend set

Going into this past weekend the Cyclones had not lost at home in their last 17 contests. Apparently, no one told the St. Louis Billikens to be intimidated about traveling north to Central Iowa. The freshman-laden squad trudged through bad weather and a minor accident to arrive at the arena Friday night. Upon arrival, they promptly beat the ‘Clones in overtime to end their unbeaten streak. The Cyclone offense struck first as Mike Gilbertson made a goal after four minutes into the first. With 15 seconds left in the period, Jon Zimmer flicked the puck past Nate Dahlen to knot the game at one. St. Louis’ Mark Shoreman evened the score at two midway through the second period. A couple of minutes later, ISU junior varsity player Josh Brady, filling in for absent teammates, scored his first goal of the season to put the ‘Clones ahead again. After a Cyclone penalty, Jordan Janes made the home team pay, tying the score yet again. Thirty-four seconds later, Zimmer gave the visitors the lead for the first time in the game. The ‘Clones rallied as Glenn Detulleo tied the game for a fourth time with less than a minute left. No team could get an advantage as the game kept going back and forth in the third. Alphonse Lordo provided the equalizer for the Billikens, tying the game at five. Iowa State would score two more times, but St. Louis answered. After Detulleo lit the lamp for the second time in the game, Janes tied the game again. Janes’ goal completed a hat trick and ultimately sent the game into overtime, where Chris Peterson gave the Billikens the victory, 8-7. “He’s the go-to guy we haven’t had in the last couple of years,” St. Louis assistant Kevin McGlynn said. The Cyclones looked to get back on track Saturday with Ramyleo Abujobarah between the pipes. As it turned out, he would be the star of this game, recording the first Cyclone shutout of the season. Rose, Leyen and Detulleo would provide all the offense needed as the ‘Clones got their revenge, 3-0. “A shutout is not just a goaltender, it’s a team effort,” ISU acting head coach Randy Daley said. “Ramy made the saves that were expected, but he went above and beyond,” Detulleo said. “When a goalie plays like that, all a team can do is watch and enjoy it.
