Fire shuts down Wallace-Wilson dining center
February 26, 2001
The Wallace-Wilson dining service kitchen will be closed until further notice after a fire Wednesday night, which resulted in extensive smoke damage to the facility. Fire Deputy Chief Russ Scott said the Ames Fire Department received a call at 11:08 p.m. reporting a fire in the Wallace-Wilson commons. He said firefighters from stations one and two arrived and were able to douse the fire out with hand-held fire extinguishers in a matter of minutes.”We arrived on scene at [11:11 p.m.], and it took a while to find where the problem was,” Scott said.He said the fire had been determined to result from cloth materials stored in the kitchen which had spontaneously combusted.”It was from linens and rag materials that had been laundered and dried from the dryer,” Scott said. “They were placed hot in a container that didn’t allow heat to escape. The heat built up and reached ignition point.”There was no structural damage to the room, but he said the smoke damage will require “a lot of cleaning up in the kitchen.”John McCarroll, director of University Relations, said the fire itself was detected by the alarm system in the building.”It was closed down at the time,” he said. “No one was injured [in the fire].”Until the damage can be repaired, McCarroll said food services are only a short walk away for Wallace-Wilson residents.”The living area of the commons were not damaged, but all the meals are now being served in Knapp-Storms,” he said.
