Fight for your right to spring break
February 26, 2001
How much money do you plan to spend on spring break this year? Have you been rationing your bar money for it? Saving since Christmas so you can fully enjoy the fun and frolic that is only two weeks away? Before you start packing your bikini, Speedo or skis, take a minute to think about those poor folks down in the Iowa Legislature. There is no spring break in sight for these Iowans, no respite from the biting cold and slippery sidewalks. In fact, Legislators are so wrapped up in their work, they have totally forgotten how hard you’ve worked for a week of fun. About $3.3 million cut from ISU’s budget may not seem like a big deal to Iowa legislators, but it will definitely impact student’s pocketbooks. Think spring break at your parent’s house next year.Today, members of the Government of the Student Body and the Inter-Residence Hall Association are traveling to Des Moines to talk to legislators. Their goal is to show government officials how much cuts will impact students at Iowa’s regent institutions. But they need your help.Board of Regents members are already hinting at tuition increases for next year, and considering this year’s 10 percent increase, the sky’s the limit. Iowa’s public universities are known for their quality education, and the regents are more concerned about maintaining quality than whether or not you hop on a plane March 12. So drop a line to your local state senator or representative. Their e-mails can be found at www.legis.state.ia.us. It’s a quick way to save yourself a couple hundred dollars. Spring break is on its way; make sure you can afford to enjoy it in the years to come.editorialboard: Carrie Tett, Jocelyn Marcus, Katie Goldsmith, Andrea Hauser and Tim Paluch
