Big three sports making a home in top 10 rankings

When I hit weeks like these where I have papers due, I’m sick and my girlfriend is mad at me, I simply can’t come up with anything earth shattering to write about. It’s times like these that I write a reflective piece to try to catch the readers up on exactly what has been going on in the world of ISU athletics. The biggest news of late is the continued impressive seasons of the men’s and women’s basketball teams and the grapplers of the mats who boast two No. 1 wrestlers and one No. 2.The men’s basketball team is on cruise control. They currently claim the second best home winning streak in the country and they are alone at the top of the Big 12. That honor came thanks, in part, to Iowa State beating Kansas for the second straight year last week. The injustice of the week came from the new AP top 25 poll which lists Kansas at No. 6 – directly one spot ahead of the Cyclones. This oversight by the voting masses should be corrected by next weeks poll after Iowa State takes on the Jayhawks this Saturday at Hilton. I will not enter my usual plea for students to help fill the seats because this top ten matchup is sold out.Fans around Iowa State are beginning to forget exactly who Marcus Fizer is. Can you imagine where this team would be if he had opted to play one more year? With that said, this year’s squad has done an amazing job of picking up the pieces in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year.Iowa State has already earned a bid to the NCAA tournament. Their concentration must now fall on finishing the season strong so they can achieve a high position for the Big 12 tournament. The only downside to their success could come when the NBA starts pursuing Coach Eustachy. That’s the price you pay when you have one of the best coaches in the country. Hopefully, Larry isn’t buddy-buddy with any NBA front office bigwigs. The women’s basketball team continues to impress every week. The current poll lists them at number six. These ladies are truly a great team, but they are still lacking respect from pretty much everyone except season-ticket holders and Wild Bill. Maybe that is just what we should expect when it comes to women’s basketball. It has been like this for years. Every year the same teams get the hype — Tennessee, Connecticut, LSU and Purdue — that Iowa State so richly deserves.I need to point the finger at myself first because I do not attend many women’s games, but I do know that there are plenty of seats available to students and the ticket prices are much more reasonable than the men’s games.People have wanted successful athletics at Iowa State for years, and now that we have them, we need to take stock of exactly what is going on. Football was great, but now we are only one of two teams in the country to have both our men’s and women’s teams in the Top 10. That is a noteworthy accomplishment.I think that the success of the wrestlers here at Iowa State has not gone by the wayside, although it seems like it when you see the attendance numbers for the home meets. Sports Illustrated recently did a piece on Cael Sanderson, who is nothing short of super human. Zach Thompson is also putting up incredible numbers and is ranked No. 1 in his weight class. Joe Heskett is no slouch at No. 2 in his weight division. College wrestling is now, and probably always will be, a “die-hard” fan sport. A lot of people just don’t get it and therefore don’t get behind it. That is totally okay. I am merely attempting to bring the accomplishments of ISU’s premier teams and athletes to the attention of everyone possible. They deserve this attention for their efforts. This Iowa winter has been cold and brutal but the action inside Hilton Coliseum has been hotter than ex-baller Stevie Johnson and current girl hoopster Tracy Gahan’s relationship. Happy Valentine’s day a day late to the teams that are dominating the polls here at Iowa State. You are all winning hearts faster than Cupid.Marcus Charter is a sophomore in journalism and mass communication from Ames. Good luck on the EUT.
