Profs collaborate on digital exhibit

Three ISU professors are taking their artwork to the digital level.J.R. Campbell and Mary Stieglitz’s exhibit: Digital Connections in Imagery Cloth and the Human Form opened at the University of Nebraska’s Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 8 and will run through Feb. 2.The exhibit consists of digital images printed on pictorial panels and clothing designed by Campbell, assistant professor of textiles and clothing, and Stieglitz, professor and chairwoman of art and design. Some of the designs were part of a collaboration with Jean Parsons, assistant professor of textiles and clothing.Campbell said the exhibit was chosen to be showcased at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery because he knew some people who were interested in their work. The professors are still looking for a place to exhibit their designs in Iowa, but the pieces can be currently viewed online at
http://www.design.iastate.edu/IDRO/digicloth.html.Using the textile and clothing department’s ENCAD 1500 TX digital textile printing system, Campbell and Stieglitz were able to print photographic images from their computers directly onto the fabric.Iowa State is one of the only universities in the nation with this digital printing equipment available in an academic setting, Campbell said.”The idea of Digital Connections is about collaboration and the fusion of technologies and art forms,” Campbell said.Collaborative ventures between the textiles and clothing department and the art and design college are expected to continue, Stieglitz said.”I think it is important to collaborate,” she said. “We have wonderful resources in the people and facilities of our colleges, that working together gives us an opportunity for synergism.”
