Swimmers blast North Dakota

The ISU men’s swimming and diving team cruised to a 240-118 victory over North Dakota last weekend.The meet marked the last home meet for seniors Jeff Gahan, Henril Ingesson, Josh Nogar, Peder Skoog and Jeremy Wilson.Winning 17 of 22 events, the Cyclones dominated the two-day meet.Iowa State took the top two spots in 11 events and won all three top spots twice.”I’m very pleased with what we accomplished this weekend,” ISU head coach Trip Hedrick said.The Cyclones started off day one of competition with a bang. The relay team Skoog, Wilson, junior Dylan de Bruin and sophomore Mike Christianson won the 200-yard medley relay with a Beyer Hall Pool record time of 1:30.91. The relay team of Ingesson, Gahan, junior Liam Short and freshman Mike Rigali placed second.Nogar won the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:13.22.Iowa State continued its success in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Aron Nakama won the event with a time 1:42.80.The team captured the top three places by dominating the 50-yard freestyle. Winning the event was de Bruin with a time of 20.35 seconds.Short also captured the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:52.36.During the event, Skoog swam the 200-yard backstroke and set a new pool record with a time of 1:46.27.The Cyclones took the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Wilson raced to victory with a time of 50.41 seconds. Short took first place honors in the 100-yard backstroke while Christianson was also victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 57.75 seconds.Iowa State placed in two of the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The relay team of Wilson, juniors Billy Reese and Doug Owen and freshman Bram Olson won the event with a time of 1:25.57. The team ended the first half of the event picking up the top two spots in one-meter diving. Sophomore David Likar won the event with a score of 277.73 points.At the end of the first day, Iowa State led 157-42.The Cyclones started day two with more record performances in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Skoog, Christianson, Wilson and de Bruin won the race with a Beyer Hall Pool record time of 3:21.29. In the race, Skoog posted a 100-yard backstroke time of 49.13 and set a pool record.Iowa State would go on to win four more swimming events.Petric, Jimenez and Newton earned first places.Sophomore Danny Binkowksi won the 400-yard individual medley.In both three-meter diving events, Likar and Fluegel would place first and second, respectively. Likar posted an NCAA Zone Diving qualifying score of 324.08 in second of the three-meter events. Fluegel won the one-meter event during the second day, and Iowa State finished off the meet with a time trial in the 200-yard freestyle relay.The relay team of de Bruin, Skoog, Newton and Gahan posted a pool record time of 1:21. The time also gives the relay team consideration for the NCAA. Championships will be held in March at College Station, Texas. During the race, de Bruin also broke the pool record for the 50-yard freestyle with a split time of 20.25 seconds.
