Think before you write, Charter

In response to Marcus Charter’s article about Drake’s ineligible players: Think before you write. Mr. Charter, you endlessly praised Iowa State’s policies concerning academics and athletics. Did you notice while you were researching that Drake holds their athletes to a higher standard than pretty much every Division I school is the country? You wrote of ISU’s rigid demands making it sound like Drake demands more of their athletes than most other schools. Every Drake basketball player is eligible by NCAA standards. I wonder if every Iowa State athlete is eligible by Drake standards?Let’s look at some other points that you made. You implied that a 2.0 GPA is easily attained. Not for everyone, especially in an environment that is not as “athlete friendly” as you said Iowa State is. A 2.0 may not sound like much to your genius mind, but for a first-year student, one bad class can drag a GPA below a 2.0 especially when Drake doesn’t issue plus or minus grades. In addition to these higher standards, basketball players put in at least 20 hours a week practicing in addition to countless hours of traveling. You said that “if you looked around at Drake’s study table most nights, you would not have seen the faces of four Bulldogs.” Every underclassman and all seniors with less than a 2.5 are required to attend study table a minimum of 20 hours a week.As for Drake’s remaining season being “in the toilet,” maybe you didn’t have the time to research their last three games. They won two of the three losing only to the current Missouri Valley Conference leader without four of their teammates. Drake is still one game away from leading the league. The next time you write a column, get your facts straight.Alicia Gaw
