Rec scuttled volleyball plans and needs to make some changes

I felt very frustrated the whole afternoon of Jan. 21 because some friends and I were not able to play volleyball that afternoon in Lied Recreation Center as we had planned due to some unexpected events. On Friday night, a notice on the wall told us that the recreation center would be closed Friday night and Saturday for some events, but it didn’t mention whether it would open Sunday or not. The staff at the front desk told me it would be open Sunday. However, when every member of our volleyball club showed up at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, we were told that the volleyball courts would not be available until midnight because they were reserved for some other plays. We had to check Beyer Hall and Forker Building. Unfortunately, Beyer was holding a gym meeting and Forker building was officially closed. Finally, we had to give up today’s practice.I totally understand these special reasons. However, I still want to tell what I think about what happened to us:1. I think school facilities should serve students first. At least, one of the playgrounds should be available for volleyball fans during the weekend. 2. In addition, I checked the Recreation Center homepage and couldn’t find any announcement on these events. I think they should update the special events schedule regularly.3. During the whole afternoon, almost no one was playing in the reserved courts, but we had to go back home. Is this kind of reservation reasonable? Doesn’t the Lied Recreation Center need to reconsider its policies about it?We have enjoyed playing volleyball and other recreation activities in Lied Recreation Center. What happened this weekend was very unfortunate. I hope the Lied Recreation Center can make its administration and service the best just as Iowa State itself strives to be the best.
