Swimmers lose to Nebraska

The ISU men’s swimming and diving team came up just short of winning a very exciting meet with Nebraska at Beyer Hall Pool Saturday.The Cornhuskers picked up the 125-118 victory even though Iowa State won seven of the 13 events. Despite Iowa State’s loss, ISU head coach Trip Hedrick said there were some very close touches for first place.”I think if you added it up, we lost the meet by maybe two-tenths of a second over two races,” Hedrick said. “That’s the nature of the sport.”Things looked good for the Cyclones from the start when the team jumped out to an early 13-4 lead with a first and third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Seniors Peder Skoog, Jeremy Wilson, Jeff Gahan and sophomore Mike Christianson finished with a Beyer Hall Pool record time of 1:31.42 for first place. Senior Henrik Ingesson, junior Billy Reese, sophomore Mike Jimenez and freshman Mike Rigali followed close making up the third place team.Nebraska shaved the ISU lead to four points after picking up first and third place in the 1000-yard freestyle. Senior Josh Nogar garnered second place for Iowa State.Continuing a 35-30 lead, the Cornhuskers placed first, third and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. The Cyclones quickly regained a 39-35 advantage after the 50-yard freestyle where junior Dylan de Bruin captured a victory with a mark of 20.38 seconds and Gahan placed third.Junior Liam Short extended the Cyclones lead to seven points in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:53.09. Nebraska got the lead back after one-meter diving. Iowa State then took a one-point advantage at 66-65 following the 100-yard butterfly. Wilson raced to first place honors at 49.95 seconds while Ingesson came in third.In the 100-yard freestyle, de Bruin gained a victory at 45.33 seconds. The Cyclones also placed first and second in the 100-yard backstroke as Skoog won the event at 49.51 seconds and Short placed second.Nebraska then took a 97-96 advantage after the 500-yard freestyle as Nogar finished in second place for the Cyclones. In three-meter diving, sophomore Dave Likar placed second with 277.73 points and Christianson placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke.Iowa State then finished off the day as the team had started it. De Bruin, Wilson, Gahan and freshman Jono Newton set another Beyer Hall Pool record at 1:21.83 in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The relay team of Reese, junior Doug Owen, sophomore Ansel Lindner and freshman Bram Olsen added a third place finish.”Through it all, defeat hurts, no question about it,” Hedrick said, “but I like where we’re at and I like what I see with this team.”
