Letter to the editor: Little help?

Leslie Knerr

Everyone has good and bad days. Some people seem to take their bad days out on everyone.

I transferred to Iowa State this year and, for the most part, I enjoy it. But almost every time I interact with ISU staff, I find myself frustrated.

I am referring to the professionals in the college offices, such as teh Financial Aid Office, the Admissions Office, the Computer Services Office.

Last March, I began interacting with these office, so I could transfer here. Everything is settled now, but I have hard feelings. I was rarely treated with courtesy I feel I deserved. I am polite and speak respectfully. In turns, I got the exact opposite— short answers and no explanations. Once I even got an “I can’t help you, bye!”

I may have asked stupide questions, but they were important to me. I wouldn’t have called otherwise.

I worked in an office for two years, and I know about poor customer service. Every customer should be treated with respect no matter what the problem.

I have attended many seminars on customer service and I have learned many useful skills. Maybe that is why this issue gets to me. I know the meaning of good customer service.

There are exeptions. I occasionally run into people willing to help in any way possible.

My advice is, if you do now enjoy interacting with students, then a university is not the place to work.
