Time to move on

Editorial Board

Two months after the election and three weeks after he was declared president-elect, George W. Bush was officially named America’s next president by the Electoral College Saturday.Bush made being “a uniter, not a divider” an important campaign slogan, and the Daily editorial board hopes he follows through on his pledge. His diverse selection of Cabinet members is a promising start, and we hope he continues to appeal to all Americans during his presidency. While Democrats and Republicans probably won’t ever hold hands and sing “Kumbaya,” Bush can help to cross the partisan divide by reaching out to leaders in both parties and working on the moderate policies for which he campaigned.Democrats, too, need to make an effort to seal the rift caused by the divisive election. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus raised half an hour of objections to the Florida Electoral College vote, and some plan to boycott Bush’s inauguration. While the 2000 presidential election was wrought with problems, from out-of-date butterfly ballots to reported problems black voters had at the polls, the election is over. The only thing to do now is accept Bush as our president-elect and try to fix voting system errors in time for the next election. The editorial board would like to congratulate Bush on his hard-fought victory. We look forward to critiquing his policies for years to come.
