Bad call, Gustafson the sports editor
January 19, 2001
It’s ridiculous to see the sports columns written in the Iowa State Daily. A recent article by Jeremy Gustafson is a prime example. Jeremy believes that he knows something about sports, and that’s a shame. His article entitled “Bad call, ESPN the Magazine” talks about Randy Moss and Kobe Bryant. His main point is that they are not the “one.” Ah, yeah. OK.According to Gustafson, these two players don’t deserve to be given the credit that they have received from ESPN and the general public. Though, in his opinion, Marvin Harrison, Chris Weber, Edgerrin James and Jason Kidd do? I think Jere was just pulling names out of a hat, huh Jere? OK yeah, Randy Moss hasn’t won a championship so why should he be given credit? Well, last I checked Marvin Harrison hasn’t one anything either, nor has Jason Kidd. Kobe Bryant has though, and he is a superstar as much as I hate to admit it, does that mean the Lakers are Kobe’s team? No it means both Kobe and Shaq are great and have big ego’s. That makes for interesting stories. Randy Moss is the best there is at his position, so you have to give him the props he deserves. The Vikings haven’t made it to the Super Bowl, but football is a team sport, and Randy can’t get them their by himself, I’m sorry. The point is ESPN is writing about superstars that people like to read about. People read about Kobe Bryant because he is a hack, or because he is a play maker. He has won a NBA championship. They read about Moss because he has the skills to be the greatest at his position, and forces teams to change their gameplan when they play him. Tim Duncan is good, but he is boring, and last I saw Eddie George lost a Super Bowl and got punked by Ray Lewis. I think ESPN is a good magazine, and they have a lot of interesting articles unlike the sports section in the Daily, where the pro-sports columns are dominated by writers who probably haven’t seen too many professional teams in person, and make up stories that annoy people and have no point because they have to reach a deadline. If ESPN the Magazine writes about Randy Moss and Kobe Bryant it must be because many people have an interest in them. If we liked to read about how Tim Duncan is a great guy and eats his Wheaties then he probably would get a lot more attention, but we don’t, sorry.
