The best things in life WERE free

David, Jean Dirks

Seems like the old adage is true: the best things in life are free. Playing in the Ames parks, cruising the bike trails, strolling through campus and visiting Reiman Gardens have all been wonderful free activities. So there is a certain sadness when we read that Reiman Gardens might soon be closing their gates to all but paying members. Karen Ross was quoted as saying, “People with lower incomes might not feel as free to walk in the garden.” That statement is particularly sad, but most certainly true. Maybe Iowa State University’s goal of “Strengthening Families to Become the Best” doesn’t quite reach out to these families. We ask that two ideas be considered before making the gardens a members-only establishment. Next time a big donor comes along, try convincing them of an endowment (instead of an addition) to keep the gardens free forever. The second is to establish a free will donation box. We are inclined to believe that there are many such as ourselves, who would gladly donate to see that the gardens remain open to everyone. Maybe it is a fine line between donation and charging a fee, but somehow donations just seem more like participation. Lastly, thanks to the many people who have donated money and time to make the gardens such a beautiful place. You have done wonderful work.
