Heaven forbid we offend Canada, says freshman

It is very fitting that a Daily writer should begin a column with a quote from a Communist leader to support his position.Mr. Kearns then claimed to be more intelligent than the president of the United States. Does Mr. Kearns back up this incredible claim? No, he chooses to concentrate on whom the missile system would offend. Heaven forbid we offend Canada. Mr. Kearns says that building the missile defense system would be illegal under the 1972 ABM treaty with the USSR. I’m sure glad that we are sacrificing our national security because of a nearly 30-year-old treaty with a non-existent country. Mr. Kearns says the missile defense system doesn’t work. Of course it doesn’t work, it hasn’t been put together yet. Did the first car work before it was assembled? Mr. Kearns compares the missile defense system to France’s Maginot Line. Kearns did not take into account the whole story. The Maginot Line was successful. It was intended to stall Germany’s advance into France. Germany was forced to go nearly 200 miles north to Belgium before heading south. The Maginot Line was attacked by Germany’s war machine, survived, and is still intact today. The missile defense system will be very similar. By itself it can never protect us. However, used in conjunction with our armed forces, it will become a formidable barrier.Tyler Guenzel
