Gustafson sports column correct in my opinion
January 22, 2001
Unlike Sean Schmidt, I agreed with Jeremy Gustafson’s column that Kobe Bryant and Randy Moss have been prematurely anointed as sports legends. The NBA and NFL have recently seen the retirement of many legends like Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Dan Marino. Others, like Karl Malone, John Stockton and Scottie Pippen are well past their prime. Instead of acknowledging that these leagues, especially the NBA, are younger and less experienced than in the past, the sports world has rushed to claim Bryant and Moss as heirs to the thrown. The NBA and NFL are team sports leagues. Bryant continually takes 15- footers with an open Shaq O’Neal in the paint. Whether or not he gets fouled, an open Shaq is an automatic two points. Players like Chris Webber and Jason Kidd play within their team’s system and still put up the unbelievable stats that Bryant seems so concerned with. Bryant and Moss are great players, but fans will have to wait a few years to see if they measure up as team leaders to the legends they’re predicted to replace.
