January 19, 2001
Ames residents will no longer have to wonder what happened to the WB. The launch of the Warner Brothers WB channel 23 is scheduled to air Saturday, said Deb Corson, general manager of the new station. “The Lost World” will kick off WB’s Saturday morning programming at 5 a.m., followed by “Total Recall” and the WB Kids Network for the morning hours. The station will be central Iowa’s sixth free, over-the-air TV station, in addition to the ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates and Iowa Public Television.WPWB Des Moines was originally scheduled for broadcast around Thanksgiving, but snowy weather delayed running a transmission cable to the 2,000-foot signal tower in Alleman, Corson said.”We’ve been working pretty much seven days a week,” Corson explained. “We’re looking forward to going on the air.”In the past, Ames and Des Moines residents were able to watch WB programming on WGN, a station out of Chicago. The WB carries several other shows geared toward “Generation Yers,” such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Felicity,” “7th Heaven,” and most recently “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” Corson said WB prime time will also be running. The station will offer the “Friends” television show in syndication weeknights from 6 to 7.The half-hour show will be slotted against the likes of “Jeopardy!,” “M*A*S*H*,” “Wheel of Fortune” and “Seinfeld.”Some ISU students are eagerly awaiting the return of the WB.Debbie Witt, sophomore in community and relational planning, said she’s looking forward to WB’s return.”It’s about time,” she said. “I don’t know why they ever took it off the air. I can’t wait to watch ‘Dawson’s Creek,’ ‘Felicity’ and ‘Roswell.'”Amanda Fiedler, freshman in apparel merchandising, design and production, said she’s also excited for the WB airing.”I can’t wait to watch ‘Dawson’s Creek’ again,” she said.
