When Gregory Geoffroy takes office this summer, he will not only be leaving his old job behind but also some family members — temporarily.Geoffroy’s wife Kathy will be dividing her time between Iowa and Maryland next year because their son, Michael, 16, will be entering his senior year of high school, Gregory Geoffroy said.”My wife will have an interesting commuting relationship for the year, but I think it’s best for [Michael],” he said.Kathy Geoffroy said Michael had already moved once to their current location in Rockville, Md., when he was in eighth grade.”He will just have one year to finish and really isn’t interested in moving,” she said. “If I were in the same situation, that’s probably how I would feel.”However, Michael was happy to hear his father was named president of Iowa State, Kathy Geoffroy said, adding that when Michael heard the news, he just grinned and said “cool.”The Geoffroys also have three other children: Susan, 26, a nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; Janet, 23, a software developer for IBM; and David, 22, a fifth-year senior at Penn State, Gregory Geoffroy said.Kathy Geoffroy said she is very happy her husband is the new president of Iowa State.”I’m very excited about it,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a good opportunity for him. I think he’s definitely ready for it.”David also said he is proud of his father’s accomplishments.”All of my life I’ve been amazed at his work ethic,” he said. “I guess this is the next step in his career. It’s incredible to me that he keeps charging on.”While Gregory Geoffroy may become tired from work, David said his father always keeps a smile on his face.”I’m just thoroughly impressed by how well he’s provided for me and my family,” he said. “I think he’s a great guy.”Kathy Geoffroy said she traveled with her husband to the presidential forums last week, and is excited about coming to Iowa State.”The people that I met were incredibly friendly and seemed very helpful,” she said. “It seems like it’s going to be a wonderful place to live.”The Geoffroys have been married since April 17, 1971. They met for the first time and married in Louisville, Ky.Gregory Geoffroy said he met his wife at a fraternity party at the University of Louisville in 1968. He said it was Kathy’s first day of her freshman year, and he was a senior.”He said the reason he was interested in talking to me was because I was a math major, and he had never met a girl who was a math major,” Kathy Geoffroy said. She taught math for awhile, and although she doesn’t work right now, she tutors some students. While it’s harder to find time for the family to do things together because the older children are out of the house, Gregory Geoffroy said the family still enjoys their time together. “One of the things we like to do together, when we find the time, is to ride our mountain bikes,” he said. “We enjoy the outdoors.”
