Letter to the editor: Tolerance should work both ways
December 3, 2000
In reply to Samantha, who feels that the tree on campus is integration of church and state:
There are two types of Christmas in this country. There’s the true Christmas (celebrating the birth of Jesus) and then there’s the “Commercial Christmas.” Both use a Christmas tree, but the commercial Christmas is celebrated by many people, many who are not Christians.
It is a time of gift giving and receiving, family gatherings and fun. It is fully possible to have Christmas without any religion at all.ΓΏ
Also, there is a little issue called “tolerance.”
If you don’t like something, don’t go to it.
I’m not gay. I don’t think being gay is right, but I don’t go and complain when the Alliance has activities. I don’t complain about the Rainbow Alliance ads around campus. I just let them do their thing and I do mine.
I think you should just relax and enjoy the season, instead of getting all bent out of shape about a tree.
Merry Christmas!
