Letter to the editor: Trees + lights = Christmas
December 6, 2000
Regardless of the schools official policy, anyone who says that Iowa State does not celebrate Christmas is naive. There areÿa couple of things across campus that reveal this.
1) Christmas trees are everywhere. Christmas trees are displayed in each of the dining halls, and who can forget the giant Christmas tree in frontÿof Beardshear? To those people who say, “No, its just a holiday tree!” Which holiday? Decorated trees aren’tÿa traditional winterÿdecoration for any religion other than Christianity.ÿ
2) Christmas music in the dining halls. Last time I checked, “O Tanenbaum” and “Silent Night” were still Christmas songs.
To all the people who will argue against this, I have one statement: If Iowa State is truly neutral about its religious decorations, then where are the Mennorahs and the Kinaras and the crescent moons of Ramadan?
