Way to go, greeks!

This year, several residence hall dwellers and members of the greek system are joining forces to build a parade float for Veishea.

The Richardson Court Association is pairing with Phi Delta Theta fraternity and Chi Omega sorority to construct the wood, garbage-bag and chicken-wire extravaganza.

In the past several years, greeks vs. dormies has been an ongoing battle on the ISU campus, and pairings like this one are a positive leap forward.

This isn’t to say members of the residence halls can’t build floats by themselves – Noble and MacDonald Houses in the Union Drive Associations have been building floats for years.

However, for RCA, the process is fairly new, and past attempts haven’t been successful. Residence hall teams have had problems with storage of their floats since they can’t be kept on the dorms’ lawns, while the greeks have found solutions to these problems long ago.

The greek-system members who are stepping in to help should be commended for their willingness to teach a historically uninvolved group how to get involved in the student-run celebration.

Instead of dwelling on the rivalry between dorms and greeks, the greeks are coming in with an attitude that needs to continue here at Iowa State. The goal is for the dorms to be able to build their own floats eventually. With the help from an experienced group, this is a very real possibility.

It’s a welcome change to see several ISU groups support the idea that Veishea is for all ISU students. If there are students who want to be a part of Veishea, they shouldn’t be limited because of their place of residence.Editorial Board: Carrie Tett, Greg Jerrett, Katie Goldsmith, Amie Van Overmeer, Andrea Hauser and Jocelyn Marcus
