Swimming and diving racks up a pair of weekend victories
December 4, 2000
ISU women’s swimming and diving team racked a pair of dual victories over the weekend, defeating St. Olaf 137-95 and Northern Iowa 145-90, in Ames.
Friday’s co-ed dual meet against St. Olaf gave head coach Duane Sorenson a chance to toy with his lineup by using many swimmers in different events.
The Cyclones recorded victories in nine of the 13 events swam. “Some of our second-line swimmers were able to step up and swim against the Oles,” Sorenson said.
Several of the nine wins were individual honors.
Alison Kimble [1,000 freestyle], Petra Plaminkova [200 freestyle], Katie Knott [50 freestyle], Kim Churn [200 individual medley], Becca Meyer [100 butterfly], Kristen Vanek [100 freestyle] and Jodel Fesenmaier [100 backstroke] all won their respective races. Meyer’s 100 butterfly time [:58.58] was the 10th best all-time at Iowa State.
“I just kind of went out and kept relaxed,” Meyer said.
The diving team dominated the 1-meter board event by sweeping the Oles.
Iowa State finished 1-2-3, lead by Thea Hoeg’s 226.80. She was closely followed by Sofie Nilsson [224.33] and Allison Wagoner [223.65].
“I think the team did a really good job of stepping up and racing each other,” freshman Kristen Vanek said. “We had some people swim-off events. And they did a great job. It shows how versatile we can be.”
Saturday, the Northern Iowa Panthers prowled into Ames for another co-ed dual meet.
Iowa State captured firsts in 10 of 13 events.
The Cyclone attack was led by senior Dara Rose’s 50 freestyle [:24.58] and 200 backstroke [2:15.47] victories.
“She swam a tapered 50 freestyle personal best,” Sorenson said.
Other ISU top finishes were Carmella Nogar [1,000 freestyle-10:43.41], Susanne Notbohm [200 freestyle-1:54.83], Becca Meyer [200 butterfly-2:12.69], Marie Tremblay [100 freestyle-:55.13], Kristen Vanek [500 freestyle-5:17.05] and Petra Plaminkova [200 individual medley-2:08.13].
Plaminkova’s time ranks sixth best all-time at Iowa State.
Thea Hoeg landed another first-place finish in the 1-meter event with a score of 234.83.
Both victories moved the Cyclones to 3-1 in dual meets this season.
“We swam outstanding,” Sorenson said. “It was another meet we had a chance to use swimmers in events they usually don’t swim.”
The ISU women will take their aquatics out on the road this weekend as they head to Iowa City for a double dual against Iowa and Northern Illinois. Competition will begin Friday at 3 p.m.
“Our squad and Iowa should have no problem swimming against a weaker Northern Illinois squad. It’ll be close against Iowa, right now on paper they hold a slight edge,” Sorenson said.
