ISU women blast Blue Demons in Cedar Rapids
December 3, 2000
After a close call against Creighton, the No. 8 ISU Cyclones got back on track against DePaul.
Angie Welle and Lindsey Wilson paced the Cyclones to an 81-65 victory in the Blimpie’s Blast held in Cedar Rapids.
Wilson played solid at point guard for the Cyclones with seven assists and only one turnover. She added 15 points on 4-9 shooting from the field.
“We’ve been on our kids pretty hard the last couple of days, especially Lindsey,” said ISU head coach Bill Fennelly. “I thought she really established the tempo of the game.”
Welle continued the play that had her predicted as preseason Player of the Year in the Big 12. She tallied 24 points and nine rebounds.
Nine Cyclones scored in the game, much different from the game against Creighton, where only eight ISU players got playing time.
“We just were getting some really good ball movement,” Welle said. “Lindsey was doing a great job at point guard. She was distributing the ball really well.”
“Everybody who played, helped in the first half,” Fennelly said.
The Cyclones added solid defense to keep the Blue Demons from getting close.
Lenae Williams, DePaul’s leading scorer entering the game, had been averaging 23.7 points per game. Iowa State held her to four points on 2-10 shooting.
“We were so conscious of where [Williams] was on the court at all times,” Welle said. “We double-teamed her and just tried to make it as difficult as possible because she’s a great player.”
DePaul head coach Doug Bruno attributed Williams low scoring to ISU’s zone defense.
“[Iowa State] obviously plays one of the best zone defenses in America,” Bruno said.
The Cyclones held DePaul to a mere 19 points at the end of the first half, while Iowa State racked up 44, giving them a comfortable lead. An inability to guard Welle led to the lop-sided win.
“You have to pick your poison,” Bruno explained. “Are we gonna come here and zone this team and let them shoot [three-pointers] all game. You can double down on Welle and give them [three pointer’s] all game. You could do your best to battle [Welle] inside and try to hold her down and not give up the three.”
One of the brighter points in the game for Fennelly was the play of reserve center Gintare Cipinyte. She played 12 minutes and scored six points and shot 75 percent from the field.
“I thought [Cipintye] was pretty good,” Fennelly said. “There was no rhyme or reason why she went in [ahead of freshman Kate Bauman]. It was kind of a hunch.”
The Cyclones also held a decisive edge in rebounding as they doubled-up the Blue Demons 44 to 22.
Leading the way for Iowa State was Tracy Gahan who pulled down 12 boards. She added 13 points for her third double-double in four games. The 6-feet guard/forward is averaging 11 rebounds per game.
Wilson who admitted the Cyclones played well in the first half, thinks that Iowa State can still improve.
“There was a couple of games that I wasn’t too happy with myself,” Wilson said. “I think as team we weren’t satisfied, and we’re still not. But we’re on our way, I think. It’s early in the season yet, but we’re still expecting to get better.”
The Cyclones will get a chance to “get better” against Drake Wednesday. Last season the Bulldogs defeated Iowa State 90-86. The game starts at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
