Wal-Mart robbed by man with gun
November 13, 2000
Police are continuing to look for a man who held up two Wal-Mart cashiers over the weekend.
Sgt. Mike Johns of the Ames Police Department said a man wearing a black ski mask and a gray hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants robbed a cashier about 2 a.m. Sunday.
“He was armed with a handgun, but we don’t have a description other than it appeared to be chrome,” Johns said. He said the man did not threaten to use the weapon.
Johns said an undetermined amount of cash was taken.
Shawn Forrester, manager of Wal-Mart, 3015 Grand Ave., declined to comment on the situation.
Johns said the lone man approached two cashiers, whose names were not released, but only received money from one of the drawers.
“He approached the first cashier and asked for money. He was given the cash from the first clerk or cashier and then approached a second clerk, who did not have a key for the register. At that time he left,” Johns said.
Johns said Wal-Mart is not a typical establishment pursued by robbers.
“We don’t have a large number of robberies overall,” Johns said. “Typically, those we do have tend to be armed robberies or at least the subject reports to have or be armed.”
Police did not give an age estimate for the man, but did describe him as a 5-feet-8-inch black male with a medium build.
