`The Day the Earth Stood Still’
November 7, 2000
As of press time, the race for the presidency was still undecided.
It was a tense time for everyone at the old Daily office, but we just cannot commit to anything at this time that does not leave us with a “Dewey Defeats Truman” aftertaste in our mouths.
Like the Bard said, “Don’t count your weasels ’til they’ve popped.”
So we thought we could either use this space to give you our award winning recipe for home-style Iowa stuffed pork chops, or we could talk about the election one more time.
Well, long story short, keep checking our Web site for the chops recipe.
Political contests get tense. Everyone takes presidential elections very seriously and very personally.
Though most of our lives will not change drastically today, if the man we wanted to be president doesn’t win, it sure feels like a scene a from “The Day the Earth Stood Still.”
Rest assured the sun will rise tomorrow, the stars will continue to shine and life will go on.
Take the energy you felt last night and channel that into your beliefs every day.
If you voted yesterday, good for you, but there is much more work to be done. It isn’t only presidents who get things accomplished in these United States. Look at Nader.
He may not have won an election, but he energized millions of Americans and drew attention to his cause.
Agree with him or not, he is a great example of what Americans can do when they choose to get involved.
Join a movement. Start one. Find out what is important to you and live every day respecting that goal.
