Letter to the editor: Dahlager generalizes
November 8, 2000
It is amazing how independent Jon Dahlager has found himself with his views of current music when he wrote Monday’s “Bored with music? Do something about it.”
Choosing Radiohead’s “Kid A” as his album of the year is a sure bet for claiming disgust for the current state of music. The album is such a sure bet that countless DJs and critics have been saying the same thing.
Not only that, but MTV has even labeled the album “Buzzworthy.” Yes, MTV and some of those commercial DJs he harshly puts down support something as artistic and unique as Radiohead.
Not only does Dahlager put down DJs and MTV, but he also puts down all of the music talent from the state of Florida. He completely looks at the state narrow-mindedly by ignoring lesser-known talents such as Sister Hazel. Just because one is against the current popular bands doesn’t give one the right to generalize that state’s music as bad.
On an even more important point, being against some of the popular bands doesn’t even give one the right to put down the music scene in general. I guess if the band isn’t from Britain and labeled as “artistic,” it just isn’t worth looking into because of the wide selection of unsigned bands on MP3.com.
In the end, you have to buy what you want no matter what part of the music-purchasing population you find yourself in.
Whether it’s Hello Dave performing at People’s next Thursday or Dave Matthews Band performing in some football stadium, just make sure it’s the sound YOU want, not some guy obsessed with sounding cool by listening to indie-bands.
