Cyclones roll past Kansas 38-17
November 18, 2000
The ISU football team closed out the regular season
in impressive fashion Saturday, as the Cyclones rolled
to a 38-17 victory over Kansas at Jack Trice Stadium.
The win allows the Cyclones to finish out their
schedule with an 8-3 record. Scouts from three
different bowl games were in attendance Saturday and
the Cyclones will find out in the next couple weeks
what their bowl destination is going to be.
Saturday’s victory was the final home game for 23
Cyclone seniors and ISU Head Football Coach Dan McCarney had plenty
of praise for his team’s foundation.
“I’m really proud of my football team, especially the
seniors,” McCarney said. “It’s been a long, long road,
and we’ve almost had to move a mountain but it’s been
one grain, one pebble at a time.”
“Eight wins is a major milestone. No matter what
program, conference or the part of the country you’re
in.”
The Cyclones offense had little trouble moving the
ball, putting up 506 yards in total offense. The
Cyclones rushed for 335 yards, as Ennis Haywood and
Michael Wagner both rushed for over 100 yards.
Haywood, the Big 12 conference’s leading rusher,
totaled 190 yards on 29 carries, while Wagner averaged
over 12 yards a carry on his way to 102 on just eight
attempts.
“You saw some of that last week at Colorado. Coach
Loney has done a good job of utilizing those guys,”
McCarney said. “We were getting some misdirection
mixed in there with some of our normal stuff. We’re
hard to stop when we can run the football.”
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cyclones were
just as effective. The Jayhawks struggled to get
anything going offensively and finished with just 296
yards of offense.
“I believe if we had played defense the entire season
like we did today, we’d be an undefeated team right
now,” ISU defensive lineman James Reed said. “There
was no real different schemes. We were just flying
around and did what we’ve done all season.”
