Letter to the editor: Violence is never the answer
November 2, 2000
We are writing in response to Mr. Roberts’ Oct. 27 letter that promoted violence towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
As members of the ISU community, we are saddened by any threats or acts of violence towards other community members.
Issues of civility, or the lack thereof, affect us all.
The Dean of Students Office and LGBT Student Services is committed to providing an atmosphere that is first and foremost safe for all members of the ISU community.
That community includes those who may wish to explore LGBT issues in an open and non-judgmental manner.
It is in this spirit that we write this letter.
The last paragraph of Mr. Roberts’ letter was particularly troublesome when he advocated using violence to “teach us how we should act toward these demoralized individuals in the future.”
Violent approaches are never appropriate and will not be tolerated by Iowa State University.
We are fortunate to work with fair-minded individuals on a daily basis and look forward to strengthening our commitment to providing a safe environment for the entire ISU community.
