Corruption must cease
November 9, 2000
The investigation of the Government of the Student Body Appointment Committee came to an end this week.
The rules committee investigation found a series of fraudulent practices in the appointment of David Sims, engineering senator, as election commissioner, including interviews conducted in an informal meeting where no minutes were taken, and the participation of GSB Vice President Lisa Dlouhy in the discussion. Additionally, the meeting was called without notification, and the meeting was conducted without a quorum.
The process of appointing Sims as election commissioner was corrupt, pure and simple. This type of behavior should not be allowed to continue, and appropriate action should be taken against the members.
After this fiasco, it will be difficult for the students of Iowa State to trust the people we elected to office.
Four members of the committee are appointed as at-large members, but the rest are GSB members.
When those we elect to represent us engage in such deceptive behavior, they lose the trust of their constituents, the very people they represent.
Sims has said the matter should have been resolved within the appointment committee, and he criticized a committee member for bringing the matter to light.
It is the responsibility of a government official, whether elected or appointed, to speak up when something in their committee is amiss. This committee member saw something wrong and reported it.
Her actions were completely justified and appropriate.
If GSB is engaging in corrupt practices in their appointments, the student body deserves to know and demand fairness from their elected officials.
