The forgotten holiday
November 16, 2000
While the sleigh bells and wreaths went up in all the department stores as soon as the pumpkins and “Scream” masks came down, one holiday’s refreshing simplicity sometimes gets lost in a consumer-driven craze.
This year, give thanks for the perfectness of Thanksgiving. Not only does Iowa State give you a week off, but it’s the perfect time to enjoy the company of your loved ones.
There’s not the added panic of giving the perfect gift that plagues the Christmas season — instead it’s just you, the family, some good eating and maybe some bonding over the Lions football game.
Take this time to rejuvenate yourselves before finals. Sleep until noon, and take a few naps after lunch. Only a few weeks remain before the end of the semester — commit yourself to finishing strong when you return instead of burning out after months of work.
Be thankful the Democratic process is alive and well in the United States. If you’re wondering what all this vote-counting trauma is all about, take a few minutes to watch CNN and educate yourself.
But most of all, while you’re gorging yourself on turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, remember how lucky you are to be sitting in your toasty house that is full of family and food.
As wonderful as the pre-Christmas sales are Thanksgiving weekend, keep in mind that a $70 pair of Doc Martens isn’t what makes the holiday season great. Family and giving thanks — that’s what Thanksgiving is really all about.Editorial Board: Carrie Tett, Greg Jerrett, Katie Goldsmith, Amie Van Overmeer, Andrea Hauser and Jocelyn Marcus
