Letter to the editor: Free cake and peace
November 2, 2000
Tonight at 6:30 p.m., free cake will be served north of Lake Laverne. Not just any cake, this will be a cake of peace. Tonight’s Opening Ceremony will launch International Week 2000 with something different to offer daily until November 11.
This year, our committee wanted to concentrate on World Peace. With that in mind, we decided on “Peace of Cake” as our theme. We would love to see many people come and join us for our events. This is not only a celebration where international students get together and enjoy themselves, but a week where they can share their cultures, food and art.
During the Opening Ceremonies tonight, there will be many interactive ways in which we are going to symbolize peace. One of those will be lighting a floating candle on Lake Laverne. Everyone is invited to light a candle for peace and be a part of this spectacular get together.
You can also learn how to build paper cranes and sign our peace boards.
United Nations Ames representative Professor Joanna Courteau will be present to give a short speech on how each of us can contribute to world peace.
So let’s meet at Lake Laverne to have some cake and do our part to promote world peace. This will be a great opportunity to find out what I-Week has to offer this year.
