ISU volleyball loses at Colorado; hosts Texas A&M Saturday night

The ISU volleyball team came up short Wednesday night when facing up against the University of Colorado.
The Buffaloes ended the night owning all three games by 15-8, 15-6, and 15-9 scores. The win also marks the fourth straight home win for Colorado, all of which have come in three game sweeps.
Colorado jumped ahead in game one with a quick 9-1 lead. Josee Roberge contributed with two kills off of Monique Gerlach’s five straight serves.
The Buffaloes went on a 4-0 run against the Cyclones to push the lead to 13-2. The Cyclones made an attempt at a come back when Nanette Allen provided three straight points off of kills but Colorado got the victory off of a Stacy Nicks attack error.
The Cyclones started strong in game two when they started a 2-0 run against the Buffaloes, but soon after Colorado would make a run for themselves. Colorado broke ahead and went on a 12-3 run off of four kills from Sonja Nielson and three from Sara Villwock.
Iowa State would only be able to put one more point on the scoreboard before the game ended on an ace by Villwock along with an Allen error.
The Buffaloes looked to make it a short night during game three, but the Cyclones had a plan of their own. The two teams traded off in leading the game until Colorado took an 8-5 lead on a Nielson kill.
Colorado ended the match on a 7-4 run sparked by three kills each from Villwock and Nielsen’s. The match ended on an error by Steph Suntken.
Colorado was led by Sonja Neilson, who finished with 16 kills and eight digs. Defensively for the Buffaloes, Meghan Barkman tallied eight blocks, Elizabeth Gower contributed with seven and Gerlach with six. Villwock made a strong performance when she ended the night with nine kills and eight digs.
Leading the way for the Cyclones were Nicks and Allen. Together the two contributed with 10 and 12 kills respectively.
Allen connected at a .346 clip from the floor and only committed three hitting errors out of 26 total attacks. Allen has now surpassed the double-digit kill barrier in two straight matches. Nicks also had a strong performance for the night when she ended with a .227 hitting percentage. Nicks also recorded a team high of eight block assists.
With the win for Colorado their record moves to 12-10 overall and 8-7 in the Big 12 conference. Iowa State moves to an overall record of 2-23 and drops their conference mark to 0-16.
The Cyclones will be back on the court Saturday to face Texas A&M at Hilton Coliseum. Game time for the Cyclones is 7 p.m.
