Letter to the editor: Editorial board is doing it . again!

Scott T Sevcik

The Daily editorial board is at it again. The Thursday editorial entitled “Why Bush is the Wrong Choice” shows a very narrow view of political choice.

It leaves me wondering: Do you screen for a blind, fanatical liberal bias when you hire your editorial staff?

The editorial board begins by declaring that their man, Al Gore, is the lesser of two evils. I’m not sure here, but I don’t think people want to vote for any kind of evil.

I certainly don’t, and if I believed that our nation’s choice was between evils, I wouldn’t vote. Luckily, there is a good man running, and if you have trouble believing that, I recommend Peggy Noonan’s Thursday editorial in the Wall Street Journal (www.opinionjournal.com).

Did the Daily’s editorial board go on to promote their man by touting his accomplishments and achievements? Of course not.

Did they illustrate any reasons why Gore’s policy proposal’s are better than Bush’s? Nope. The Daily listed a string of out-of-context George W. Bush quotes as if he is the only person on Earth to ever say something wrong.

I debated responding. Do I want to sink to their level? Do I want to respond with a list of Al Gore quotes?

As it turns out, I do. If the Daily feels this is what the voters at Iowa State need to see, then so be it. Let’s even the field.

During his failed 1988 presidential campaign Gore said “A zebra does not change its spots.”

Zebra’s have stripes Al. Gore was impressed by the Chicago Bulls at their peak.

He even commented about their star player: “I tell you that Michael Jackson is unbelievable, isn’t he? He’s just unbelievable.” I wonder what Gore thinks about Michael Jordan’s singing ability.

In his book “Earth in the Balance,” Gore said, “It seems an easy choice — sacrifice the tree for a human life — until one learns that three trees must be destroyed for each patient treated.” Huh? Then there are the legendary exaggerations. “During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet,” said Gore in a CNN interview in 1999.

Bill Clinton has been “one of our greatest presidents,” Gore said. He also said, a decade after stating in his ill-fated 1988 campaign, that “My first pledge will be to restore integrity to the White House. And I’ll fire anyone who has lied to the American people or the United States Congress.” I love irony.

Your editorial was not helpful and neither is this letter. Let’s start over. Offer the voters what they need. If there are reasons to vote for Gore instead of Bush, offer those reasons to your readers. Supporters of Bush will respond in kind.
