Brinkman, Kinyua qualify for NCAA cross country meet

ISU cross country runners Daniel Kinyua and Kelly Brinkman earned trips to the NCAA Championships with top five finishes at an NCAA Division Midwest Regional in Waterloo Saturday.
Kinyua, senior, won the men’s race, covering the 10,000 meter course in a winning time of 30:28 while Brinkman, sophomore, placed fourth in the women’s race. Brinkman clocked a time of 20:55 over 6,000 meters.
Both runners will be in action at the NCAA Championships held at the ISU Cross Country Course Monday.
The Cyclone men’s team finished seventh with 158 points. The Cyclone women finished in sixth with 159 points.
Oklahoma State won the regional title for the men with 68, while Missouri was second with 98.
For the women, Kansas State raced to victory with 61 points, and Minnesota finished second with 84 points.
Mike Mwangong was the next Cyclone finisher after kinyua, coming in 25th with a time of 31:13. Chris Francois finished 44th in 31:46, while Matt Williams came in 50th at 31:50. Rounding out Iowa State’s scoring was Philemon Too, who finished 60th in a time of 32:14.
Laurie Meythaler finished 26th for the Cyclone women in a time of 21:40, while Jessica Huff was right behind in 28th at 21:41.
Freshman Monica Erickson crossed the line in 22:20 for 47th place and Cara Van Eck finished 61st in 22:32.
