Cyclone volleyball faces off against Cornhuskers

Iowa State will look to redeem themselves after a tough loss to Texas A&M.
The Cyclones match up against top ranked Nebraska tonight in Lincoln. Iowa State lost the first meeting against Nebraska 0-3.
The Huskers lead the all-time series against the Cyclones with a 56-0 edge. Iowa State has not taken a set from the Huskers since 1994.
“Nebraska’s a great team,” saidISU Head Coach Linda Grensing, “They’re rated No. 1 for a reason.”
Nebraska comes into tonight’s matchup holding a 24-0 overall record along with an impressive Big 12 record of 16-0. The Huskers lead the conference in hitting percentages, .327, and blocks per game, 4.08.
“Nebraska’s a great opponent to play against and also great players to learn from,” Grensing said.
Leading the way for the Huskers are sophomore middle blockers Amber Holmquist and Laura Pilakowski.
Holmquist is the Big 12 leader owning a .420 hitting percentage. She has only committed 53 errors in 448 attacks.
Currently in Husker team statistics, Holmquist is second on the team in kills with 241. Pilakowski leads the team in kills as she owns 325 on the season. For Iowa State, Stacy Nicks continues to be the Cyclones key enforcer. Nicks leads the team in kills with 232, a hitting percentage of .241, and blocks with 101. She has only committed 91 hitting errors out of 585 total attacks, and has raised her career hitting mark from .169 to .190.
The lone senior looks to leave her mark in Cyclone history by breaking school records. Nicks is tied for fifth on Iowa State’s all-time career block assists with Kari Mitchell, with 256. She is only three solo blocks shy of tying Rachelle VanScayco’s record.
Nicks currently owns 80 solo blocks of her own.
“Stacy [Nicks], Sarah [Rollman], and Nanette [Allen] have played pretty consistent in previous games,” Grensing said, “Hopefully they’ll remain constant.”
The Cyclones come into tonight’s game owning an overall record of 2-24 and a Big 12 record of 0-17. Tonight at 7 the Cyclones will try their luck playing against the top rated Huskers in Nebraska Coliseum.
“Nebraska has a great crowd who are very supportive of good volleyball,” Grensing said, “We’re looking forward to playing there.”
