IRHA votes down IT committee

The Inter-Residence Hall Association voted down a bill Thursday night that proposed adding an IRHA committee to assist the director of information technology.
IRHA voted 1-17-5 against the bill. The majority said the reason was because Director of Information Technology Jeremy Hayes was against the formation of the committee even though he was not at the meeting.
“Jeremy sent out an e-mail about this; he is very opposed,” said IRHA President Paul Duncan. “I don’t see a need for this because if we give him oversight, it might complicate things.”
Wallace Representative Michael Mikkelson, co-author of the bill, said the committee would help with keeping the IRHA Web site updated and researching on technology-related issues.
“The committee is not being placed for Jeremy’s benefit,” he said. “I am representing my constituents on this. They want to know what is being discussed in IRHA prior to the meeting.”
Mikkelson also said he would have liked to have Hayes present at the meeting so that he could personally argue his case.
“He hasn’t seen the bill and his opinions are not relevant to the bill as it reads,” Mikkelson said.
Some members did not understand Mikkelson’s motives towards the bill and where he was going to get enough people to be on the committee since parliament members had already been placed in their respective committees.
“Through [Hayes’] e-mail and what his opinions are, it seems to me that you’re trying to go over the director of information technology,” said Towers Residence Association treasurer Arthur Alfred.
Director of Special Events Pat Blair said IRHA did not need another committee.
“I think, [Mikkelson’s] opinion aside, this is still a bad idea,” he said. “I think the general feeling is that committees are bad.”
